Clueless

There really are two Americas, I guess:
In both presidential debates, Kerry has shown himself to be of far superior intellect and character than Bush. He speaks honestly to the American people, his ethics are unimpeachable and, clearly, with 20 respected years in the Senate, he has far better credentials to lead the country than did Bush when he was elected four years ago. And a far greater depth of understanding of domestic and foreign affairs to do it now.
That was former MN Governor Elmer L. Andersen in the Strib. Since he was never my governor, I feel perfectly fine tearing it apart:
- Being a better public speaker or debater doesn’t mean you’re more intelligent or intellectual. Sorry, but the smartest people I’ve met—even the ones to whom English is a first language—have not necessarily been good public speakers. You may need a certain amount of intellect to be able to speak effectively in public, but that bar is quite low. The rest is talent and style; Bush is better 1-on-1, and Kerry is better in public. How does that make one smarter than the other? I’ve also known people who were great at debating but never bothered themselves about the facts or morals of what they were arguing. Do they have “far superior intellect(s)” compared to those of us who think about situations but may not express them terribly well at a podium?
- Character? Character? What have you seen from Kerry that shows even the slightest hint of character, besides his “marrying up” quip from last night? His entire public persona is crafted to avoid showing anyone what his character really is, aside from the fact that he wants you to know he likes “extreme” sports and bikes a lot.
- Ethical and honest, eh? I suppose to a former politician, there isn’t much another politician can say that will appear unethical. I’d like you to explain to PJ O’Rourke and some Vietnam POWs exactly how ethical Senator Kerry has been.
- 20 respected years in the Senate: You know, the same way that Mark Dayton has 4 respected years in the Senate, hiding in the shadow of a predecessor or “mentor.”
Go read the whole thing, if you feel the need to find out that Cheney is “evil” and is running the whole thing. It would be funny if Elmer didn’t actually believe it.

UPDATE: Interesting note: for a “Republican,” Anderson sure gives a lot of money to democrats (yes, he does live in Arden Hills). Specifically, $2k to Kerry (to be expected, considering this endorsement), plus $200 to Jim Oberstar in this election cycle. Previous cycles:
- 5/27/1999, $1,000, Lillehaug, David L (DFL)
- 3/5/2000, $250, Oberstar, James L (DFL)
- 6/14/2000, $250, Gutknecht, Gil® (we got
ONE!) - 8/14/2000, $500, Yanisch, Rebecca (DFL)
- 8/28/2000, $250, Yanisch, Rebecca (DFL)
- 8/29/2000, $500, Novak, Steven G (Steve) (DFL)
- 9/19/2000, $500, Oberstar, James L (DFL)
- 10/12/2000, $250, Foley, Tom (Independence Party)
- 5/8/2001, $500, Oberstar, James L (DFL)
- 9/12/2001, $500, Oberstar, James L (DFL)
- 8/14/2002, $400, Wellstone, Paul (DFL)
- 8/25/2004, $200, Oberstar, James L (DFL)
- 6/4/2004, $2,000, Kerry, John (D)
So that’s $6950 err, $6600 for Democrats, $250 to a Republican, and $250 to an IP candidate. Sounds like a Republican to me! I mean, I’m sure a LOT of Republicans donated to Wellstone…
Compare to Zell Miller, who many lefty bloggers have been accusing of not being a “real Democrat,” but who actually did give money to mostly Democrats. Interesting.
