And what better way than start food blogging, amirite?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Except I hate food blogs.  Well, the currently-in-vogue ones, at least<sup>1<\/sup>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You know them: too many glossy photos, six popup ads trying to get you to sign up for their email list, and finally a recipe at the end that turns out to have been tested by absolutely no one and ends up being (at best) underwhelming.  Pretty but tasteless seems to be a common theme. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, I didn&#8217;t want to do that. But I don&#8217;t exactly have time or energy to create my own recipes at the moment.  I do, however, have about 1000 cookbooks<sup>2<\/sup>. But I&#8217;ve only had a handful of cookies out of it; just the classics, mostly, though  I&#8217;ve made a few additional ones.  But there are something like 450 recipes in there.   So&#8230; how about a recipe a week for as long as I can stand it? Time to dig up my macro lenses?<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I had to try them before frosting, and&#8230; they&#8217;re decent, but subtle, with a cakey texture.  Definitely needs the frosting.  Which means the cookie itself could use some additional flavor<sup>3<\/sup>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"622\" height=\"369\" src=\"http:\/\/stevegigl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/DSC_0045.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-434\" srcset=\"http:\/\/stevegigl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/DSC_0045.jpg 622w, http:\/\/stevegigl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/DSC_0045-300x178.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 622px) 100vw, 622px\" \/><figcaption>That&#8217;s powdered sugar from mixing the frosting.  Really.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>And now the mise for the frosting, which is on page 151.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"568\" height=\"427\" src=\"http:\/\/stevegigl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/DSC_0042.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-432\" srcset=\"http:\/\/stevegigl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/DSC_0042.jpg 568w, http:\/\/stevegigl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/DSC_0042-300x226.jpg 300w, http:\/\/stevegigl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/DSC_0042-480x360.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 568px) 100vw, 568px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>You basically dump everything together and mix, although the whisk was a bad idea due to clumping (and the aforementioned powdered sugar mess).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"742\" height=\"496\" src=\"http:\/\/stevegigl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/DSC_0043.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-433\" srcset=\"http:\/\/stevegigl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/DSC_0043.jpg 742w, http:\/\/stevegigl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/DSC_0043-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 742px) 100vw, 742px\" \/><figcaption>You can actually end up with <strong>all<\/strong> of the frosting inside the whisk&#8217;s wires.  Do not recommend.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the cookies are slightly browned on the edges, take them out and cool them.  The good news is, you don&#8217;t need to have them completely cooled to frost them, because it won&#8217;t run as long as they have cooled a bit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"533\" height=\"463\" src=\"http:\/\/stevegigl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/DSC_0047.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-435\" srcset=\"http:\/\/stevegigl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/DSC_0047.jpg 533w, http:\/\/stevegigl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/DSC_0047-300x261.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 533px) 100vw, 533px\" \/><figcaption>I can frost quickly, or prettily, but not both.  Oh who am I kidding, I can&#8217;t do either.  <br>(I also really need to get the lighting situation figured out.)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Verdict: B+<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Not bad.  Not earth-shattering either, but the frosting adds a lot.  A bit of extra orange zest (or maybe extract?) might help, and I am kicking myself for not putting vanilla extract in the frosting to go for a Dreamsicle effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>UPDATE 1\/15: Upgrade these to an A-, because they went fast and everyone liked them.  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><sup>1<\/sup> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seriouseats.com\">Serious Eats<\/a> is fine.  There are a few others, but a very few.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><sup>2<\/sup> A very slight exaggeration.
